Experts offer the following tips to protect your Social Security number (SSN) and protect yourself from identity theft: Do not carry your Social Security card, passport or birth certificate in your purse or wallet; cancel any credit cards you do not use; do not share your SSN when it is not necessary; remove your name from the marketing lists of the three primary credit bureaus by calling (888) 5OPT-OUT; request a copy of your Social Security Personal Earnings and Benefit Estimate Statement at least every three years to make sure the information in your file is correct; be aware of what is on your credit report -- obtain your report once or twice a year to be sure it is correct.

VA Hospital Update

All veterans should register with their local VA Hospital. You’ll never know when you might need the services, or you’ll never know when the government may not admit new applicants from the older guard. The Veterans Administration has recently extended the time for recently discharged veterans to 5 years for full medical and 180 days for dental. This is great news for those veterans! If you haven’t sign up with the your local VA Hospital, click on the link below for the 1010ez application.

Are you a veteran collecting Social Security? If you are, you may be eligible for an extra benefit and it’s added to your current monthly payments. In most cases, the Social Security office asks for your DD-214 when you apply but not always. Call your local Social Security office to ensure you are receiving this benefit.
If you are not receiving this benefit take your DD-214 to your local Social Security office and apply. This benefit is retroactive from the time you started receiving your payments. Please note, retired military and government personnel are not eligible due to the "time in service" computed to their retirement payments.
The following are the basics for eligibility for this benefit, check with your local Social Security office for more details or go the following link for more information.

Served in 1940 – 1956

While on active duty during this time you did not pay Social Security, but your record may be credited with $160/month earnings for service from September 16, 1940 to December 31, 1956.

Served in 1957 – 1977

While on active duty you were credited with $300 for each calendar quarter you received base pay.

Served in 1978 – 2001

While on active duty you were credited with additional $100 (up to a max of $1,200 a year) in earnings for every $300 of base pay. Note for those who enlisted after September 7, 1980, and did not complete at least 24 months of active duty or your full tour, you may not be eligible.

Served after Jan 01, 2002

In January, 2002 Public Law 107-117, the Defense Appropriations Act, stopped the special extra earnings that had been credited to service personnel.
